How to Configure RocketChat after installing it with an Automatic Installer?

October 2nd, 2016

RocketChat is an open source software and only Dewlance  Linux VPS allows you to Automatically install RocketChat Software with just one click. However, once you complete the installation, you will need to update the URL of your RocketChat on your VPS. Rocket.Chat is a Web Chat Server, developed in JavaScript, using the Meteor fullstack framework. It is a great solution for communities and companies wanting to host their own chat service.

Note: Our Automatic RocketChat App Installer takes 10 minutes because the OS Installation, plus the RocketChat automatic installation take 10 minutes, which means you shouldn’t reboot your VPS before the installation is complete.

After successful installation, you will need to update the URL of the website with which you will use RocketChat. You can use https(SSL Protected) or non-SSL protected but we recommend that you use an SSL protection. You can also use Apache or Ngnix and now we are going to show you how we can change our website’s URL for RocketChat.

How to update Rocket.Chat Website URL after installing with the Automatic Installer?

Login to your Dewlance VPS via SSH and follow these steps.

Step 1:  First we need to stop RocketChat by entering this command.

systemctl stop rocketchat.service

Then we need to edit the rocketchat.service file so run this command on your SSH terminal:

nano /usr/lib/systemd/system/rocketchat.service

Step 2:  Find the line ROOT_URL=http://example.com:3000 and modify your URL to your custom URL, for example ROOT_URL=http://dewlance.com:3000

Press Ctrl+O and then enter to save changes. Then use  Ctrl+X to exit.

We made changes so we need to reload daemon and restart RocketChat. In order to do so, enter these two commands:

systemctl daemon-reload

systemctl restart rocketchat.service

Wait for a few minutes and open http://example.com:3000. Replace example.com with your domain name and RocketChat will open in your browser.

Done. Wasn’t it easy?

How to Change the RocketChat Port?

Step 1: Changing a port is the same as changing the website URL. You only need to change the default port 3000 to a different port.

ROOT_URL=http://example.com:3000/ PORT=3000

As you can see in the screenshot, we changed our default port from 3000 to 2020. Once the port is changed, save and exit by pressing CTRL+O and CTRL+X.

Step 2:

As you saw, we made changes so we need to run these two commands:

systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl restart rocketchat.service

Now we need to open our new port in the firewall, run the following command and replace the port with your custom port:

firewall-cmd –zone=public –permanent –add-port=2020/tcp
firewall-cmd –reload

Now you can access your RocketChat by opening your website in the browser using your custom port, such as http://example.com:2020.
